Qualification Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Not all members of my family are legally able to reside in the United States, is this a disqualification?

Yes, unfortunately we must abide by policies that require all members living in a Habitat home to be legally able to reside in the United States.

  • Why is a family of two not displayed?

Currently we don't display a income range for a family of two. However, if you are interested in learning more about the income range for a family of two, please contact our office.

  • What goes into the Income Range, is it only income from work?

No, we also consider any child support payments recieved, social security, disability payments, an other income including salaries or wages from all those employed in the family. Unemployment income is not considered long term income and is not counted as such.

  • Since you all ask for an income range, do you check for credit?

Yes, we do check the credit worthiness of the applicants. However, we do not base our selection decisions based on credit score. Instead we look to see if you have the ability to repay the zero-interest mortgage without placing an undue burden on the rest of your budget. Medical debt is not considered as part of the credit worthiness of a family.

  • Why these requirements?

We believe that it is the best interest of the future homeowner to select those who are most likely to succeed in our program. Therefore, our selection criteria ensures that our families will be able to own a home of their own without defaulting on the mortgage or limiting their ability to meet their other financial obligations. Instead, we hope that (and generally succeed) at keeping our families in their homes enriching their lives in the process.
